    • Arte del Cambio – Bankers
    • Arte della Seta – Silk weavers (incl. Bronze sculptors)
    • Arte dei Medici e Speziali – Physicians and pharmacists (incl. painters and shopkeepers who sold spices, dyes, and medicines
    • Arte dei Vaiai e Pellicciai – Furriers
  • Arti mediane (Intermediate Guilds)

Members of the 21 Guilds make up the populo grasso (the well to do, the fat ones). Only members of the 21 Guilds may hold office.
The rest of the populace are the minuto populo (the small ones). They are the skilled and unskilled workers including weavers, spinners, dyers, boatmen, labourers, peddlers and others—who despite constituting a majority of the population, were barred from forming guilds.
